HEPCA
HEPCA is an internationally recognized NGO specializing in the field of marine and land conservation. It was founded in 1992 by 12 representatives of the diving community in response to serious environmental threats affecting the Red Sea’s delicate and pristine eco-system.
Since their inception, HEPCA has grown into an international team of scientists and industry experts.
HEPCA is actively working towards the protecting and preserving of the natural resources of the Red Sea, as well as promoting conservation and sustainable tourism practices.
HEPCA works closely with a number of Egyptian governmental departments including; the Red Sea Governorate (RSG); the National Conservation Sector; and the National Parks of Egypt.
At HEPCA’s core is a no compromise attitude for the future. Its primary objective has remained essentially unchanged from day one: working towards the protecting and preservation of Egypt’s natural resources.
Please respect our environment by sticking to the following rules:
Water sports (snorkelling, diving…):
- Do not touch ANYTHING underwater!
- Take only pictures, leave only bubbles: Do not take underwater souvenirs, coral and shells belong in the sea and nowhere else!
- Treat the marine life with respect. Jumping right into a herd of dolphins for example is certainly not what the mammals like. Let marine life approach you and not the other way around.
- Keep our sea clean! Solid waste is a serious threat to the well-being of the marine life. NEVER throw anything over board and take care that nobody around you will do so either.
- Respect our fishing regulation: spear fishing and trawling is prohibited!
- Do you witness wrong behaviour? Educate the people around you about respectful behaviour towards the marine life!
- Do you witness a violation? Take pictures of the vessels and parties involved and send a violation report to HEPCA
Solid Waste:
- Do not throw anything on the street! Use the bins provided. If there is no bin around you, keep your rubbish until you find one.
- Try to produce as little garbage as possible. Remember: water bottles can easily be refilled, it does not always have to be a new one.
- Try to minimize the volume of your rubbish. Cans and bottles for example can be squashed.
- Do not accept plastic bags! Plastic bags are officially forbidden in the Red Sea governorate! Bring your own bag when shopping or ask for paper bags. 70% of Red Sea turtle’s deaths are caused because the animals choke from plastic!
